Welcome back, ladies! We’re continuing with Part II of our two part series featuring the best gown designers in India from A-list couturiers to hidden gems. After much debate, we’ve come up with a list of our favorite designers for reception dresses and cocktail gowns in the country. In no particular order, we’re celebrating designers who understand the girl within each bride and unfailingly deliver designs with unabashed femininity and grace. We’re talking about sublime body flattering fabrics, use of embroidery, embellishments and sequins that will soften a bride in a beautiful way when she wears the dress on her most special day.
1. PAYAL SINGHAL
There is a simple, pristine quality to these Payal Singhal dresses that leave me in awe. It’s not the kind of work that jumps out and screams at you, yet there is a sense of sophistication and elegance about them that is majestic and royal. Perfect for casual pre-wedding functions like cocktail night or a more formal post wedding reception dinner.
2. KAMAALI COUTURE
I adore most of Kamaali Couture’s gowns but the two that we’ve featured are my absolute favorites. I love the off-the-shoulder romance and feminism of the pink one; and the mystique and allure of the silver blue gown below.
The light flowy movement of the garment gives it a girly romantic feel. There’s something very princess like about Kamaali Couture’s gowns.
3. NEETA LULLA
Neeta Lulla is one of the most popular costume designers, couturiers and fashion stylists in India. Four-time winner of the prestigious National Film Awards and a career spanning over 26 years, she is one of the sought after names in the Indian fashion industry. At MWP ,we love her avant-garde, timeless creations.
The iridescent beading on the dress gives it an ethereal look. The color, the neckline and the fabric are incredibly flattering to any body type as well.
4. ASHIMA LEENA
Ashima Leena gowns are all about romantic minimalism and quiet sophistication. The clever use of colors, bold designs and fabulous attention to detail make these dresses oh so desirable!
5. RIMPLE AND HARPREET NARULA COUTURE
In my opinion, this is one of Rimple and Harpreet Narula’s most majestic creations. The wonderfully rich and sensuous gold color will work wonders on an Indian bride while the elaborate dazzling embroidery will make sure she is the star of the night!
6. JYOTSNA TIWARI
I love Jyostna Tiwari’s work for the simple reason that it is minimalist yet has a very modern fairy tale princess like quality about it.
7. FRONTIER RAAS
I like the beautiful movement of the gowns by Frontier Raas. Frontier Raas made the cut in our list of top design houses for reception dresses & cocktail gowns thanks to their pretty detailing, flattering fabrics and incredibly ornate beading. It’s a personification of how Indian bridal reception dresses should look. I can’t imagine a bride not looking good in this.
8. ROHIT VERMA
In my opinion, Rohit Verma cemented his status as an iconic fashion designer with his stunning creations at the Marigold Watches Fashion Show at Mumbai in 2013. His collection featured contemporary and eclectic traditional wear, evening gowns and dresses.
The sublime detailing and embroidery work done on this Rohit Verma gown, with majestic colors like peach pink, red, beige and silver makes this dress one of the most sophisticated ‘Indian inspired’ dresses I have seen so far by any designer.
9. JADE
On their wedding evening where most brides would want to wear glitter, Jade’s dresses on the contrary are all about quiet luxury and understated opulence, and that’s what I love the most about them! What sets the famous South Bombay brand by the designer duo-Monica and Karishma is their creating timeless pieces representing traditional Indian crafts in a refreshing and new avatar. vatsets their creations apart.Their passion to create timeless pieces representing the traditional Indian crafts in a distinct and refreshing new avatar sets their creations apart.
10. DOLLY J
I love the futurism of this Dolly J gown. It may not be an ideal reception dress per say, but is surely a gorgeous option for a cocktail gown. The use of modern unconventional colors, inventive designs and simple detailing makes Dolly J one of our most preferred dress designers in the country.
