Hi Usha! Tell us what are the latest trends for wedding cakes?
Your wedding cake isn’t just a dessert at the end of the reception; it’s the style exclamation of your whole wedding, the sugary centrepiece of the day! A wedding cake is an easy and cheap way of creating a highly personal and show stopping symbol of your wedding. Your cake doesn’t have to be simple and round. There are so ways to personalize the cake by choosing the perfect colours, flavours, shapes and motifs. You can opt for floral cakes, theme cakes, fondant cakes, multi tiered tall cakes. To nail down a design rely on your personal sense of style as well as the decor of your event. If it’s a girly romantic decor that you have opted for, you can go for a pretty pastel-shaded cake with a few pink peony or rose sugar flowers. Vintage wedding? Then maybe it’s a tall cake with thin ribbon trims and pearls. Browse through tons of cake photos to get a better idea of colours and designs that you can use and save your favourites to show your baker. You can even use your monogram to give an extra personal touch. Get creative and take inspiration from your decor, invites and other wedding stationery. You can also go for fancy cake toppers that are available with most wedding bakers.
How much does a wedding cake cost?
Be prepared to pay anywhere between Rs 850 to Rs 2500 for wedding cakes and in some cases all the way up to Rs 5000 per kg of cake. More complicated the cake, the more you’ll pay. Fondant is generally more expensive than buttercream. Fondant cakes generally cost at least Rs 300-400 more than butter cream cakes per kg. If you want elaborately moulded shapes, unusual colours, expensive flavours or handmade sugar flowers, you’ll pay more accordingly for the cake designer’s time and labour. Alternatively you can opt for a highly recommended baker and work with them to come up with a wedding cake design that falls within your budget. In general, most wedding bakers charge around Rs 1200-1500 per kg in major cities across India.
What according to you are classics?
Icing can be used to create embellishments but there are many other beautiful decorations that can make a classic wedding cake. Intricate flowers made from gum paste, also called sugar paste (a type of sugar dough); swags or dots piped in royal icing (made from egg whites and confectioners’ sugar); and fruits or blossoms shaped from marzipan (a paste of ground almonds and sugar, which can also cover tiers) are classic wedding cake ideas. Fresh flowers and fruits are wonderful as well.
Parting tips?
Start planning early, choose a baker that matches your sense of aesthetic, be creative with your design, make sure your cake tastes as good as it looks, experiment with flavours and lastly make sure you eat some of your wedding cake! J Thanks for sharing your thoughts Usha!
